Needle Felting Extravaganza

From Gallery Hanahou
"We were happy to have a great crowd of fiber art enthusiasts at the opening, and the presence of artists Hine Mizushima and Moxie made it a very special evening. Everyone who came was taken in by Hine's undulating sea creatures, Kit Lane's enchanting Strangeland sculptures, Moxie's carefully recreated objects, and the detailed fairy tale scenes by Yoko Nomura

The show is up through April 1st, so please stop by and see it yourself if you're in the NYC area! If you can't make it in person, you can see all of the pieces in the show in our catalog, now available for download here. (Pieces have been selling fast, so some may no longer be available.)

The sold-out workshop with Moxie on March 5th was also a blast: Moxie is an excellent teacher and needle felting evangelist. Everyone went home with a new creation and plenty of materials to keep making. If you missed the workshop, you can teach yourself to needle felt by picking up a signed copy of Moxie's book I Felt Awesome in our shop

Hine's Banana Slugs and Interview

Today is the next awesome Schmancy plush release. These adorable banana slugs were made by the super talented Hine. They are super limited so don't delay! We caught up with Hine for a quick interview.

S- I really love your work. Everything you make has so much detail and care. How long does it generally take to make a piece and how often do you create a new piece?

HM- Thanks! I make each piece quite slowly. According to one of my friends, I am slower than a turtle at any work! :D I think I am probably twice as slow as an average crafter (I need 48 hours a day!). I'm ashamed to say I actually don't create many plush or dolls, but when there is a special occasion, like an exhibition, a commissioned work or a video project, I love to elaborate and concentrate to create my pieces.

S- Can you tell us a bit about your toy for Schmancy?

HM- They are Banana slugs. I know only three types so far, the yellow ones, wild ones (rare) and albino ones (very rare). If you go hiking in the forests in Vancouver, you can often see them. One of them is actually my assistant. You've probably seen him in my stop-motion video (http://sheishine.blip.tv/file/1677747/). He always works very hard, but he is tiny, so he can make only one Camera camera case a month. Recently my friend Mr. Squid (32, single, ....anyone?) also got a cute Albino Banana slug as a pet (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sheishine/3626013218/). I'm working on a stop-motion video with them now.

S- What are some of your summer plans?

HM- Making some pieces for the Plush You show will be one of the most important things in my summer plans. And we are going to visit NY soon, which is very exciting. There is also an exhibition of Kokeshi art in LA from July, in which I'm participating. I hope I can make a visit there. Other than that, I spend my not-too-hot summer here in Vancouver as always.

WoW!

When I say I am cleaning Schmancy, this time I really mean it. It's getting a makeover. I can't stand looking at the junk I have acquired in the last few years being here. Then there are items that have just been here way too long. I need some new products so people don't leave empty handed and that means I need room. I don't need plush...just throwing that out there...just other items, mainly vinyl but anyways I should not be blogging, I just needed a break.

And I couldn't ignore the awesomeness to be hand over on the Plush You flickr group

like this plush roller skate!

Or the crazy realistic looking corn cobs!

Or the cute new weeds by mochimochi land

Or this amazing Goth girl by Robyn Fabsits

More to come about these toys that will be released July 15th by Hine

Hine Mizushima Interview and Giveaway

The second I saw one of Hine's pieces I immediately gasped and smiled. When I asked her to be in my button book and she said yes, I immediately gasped and clapped my hands. The second I read that she had also applied to Plush You! I gasped and jumped up and down. Her work is simply amazing. She is one of those people I think a lot of people are watching and on the edge of their seat wondering what she is going to come up with next. I really enjoyed interviewing her and hope you enjoy reading it. Leave a comment here with contact info for your chance to win one of her amazing camera camera cases!

S- For those Plush You readers who might not know who you are, can you give us a
little background information on you

HM- Hello! My name is Hine (pronounced [hee-neh]) Mizushima. I was born and raised in Japan. I majored in Japanese traditional paintings at an art university, and worked as a designer/Illustrator for paper products in Tokyo. Then after I met my husband, we decided to move to Rome, then Paris, then NY. And two years ago we moved to Vancouver, Canada with our lovely son, and at the same time my creative life was completely changed! I was always just an Illustrator, but now I'm a PSMAVA (Puppet-Stop-Motion-Animation-Video-Artist) and a (slow) crafter as well, and I just LOVE to make things..

S- You have had various bouts of fame, with your video for They Might Be Giants, to your plush creations making the rounds on various craft sites. Why did you decide to get into plush work?

HM- I've never thought of getting into plush work before. I didn't even know what "plush" meant! But when I started to work on the second stop-motion music video for a They Might Be Giants kids DVD a year and a half ago, the wife of one of the band members, Robin, who is a talented musician and also a super crafter, made some great needle-felted number-shaped puppets for the video. So I wanted/needed to make other characters and the props with the same materials to go with them. That was the beginning. It was actually a lot of fun and easy to create 3D stuff with felting wool! Since then, I have been getting into plush work little by little. My plush always has wire inside, so you can pose them however you want!

S- How did you start working with They Might Be Giants?

HM- First of all, I have to say that I REALLY love their music! One day, I stumbled upon 'How to make stop-motion video with your digital camera and iMovie' on the Internet. So I made a video with tiny puppets for their music, just for fun. Then I tried to post it on their My Space page, but I didn't understand how it works. Then I found 'send message' button instead, so I simply sent them the link of my video. Then a few days later, they contacted me, asking me to work on a video project with them! I REALLY freaked out, of course.... I'm working on a different project with them now.

Hine Mizushima is one of those people that is multi-talented with an amazing portfolio whom I imagine is still very gracious about her successes. She did this awesome video for They Might Be Giants and she makes awesome plush. I am really excited to have her participating in this year's Plush You show.
